Uchiwa fans are handcrafted from bamboo and Japanese paper coated with persimmon tannin for strength and durability. Over time, the tannin will deepen to a beautiful rich hue. Uchiwas (fans) are considered by some to be a lucky charm and are often used as gifts. Though traditionally used to fan charcoal or cool steamed rice, this fan can be used to cool off on a hot day. Made by Kurikawa Shoten
Kurikawa Shoten was founded in 1889 and is located in Yamashika, Kumamoto. They are the only workshop that still uses a traditional technique of paper fan making that has been practiced since the 1600s.
